Music Lineup

Phutureprimitive is the moniker of Bay Area producer and songwriter Rain. Early childhood photos reveal Rain sitting at the piano plinking keys, grinning from ear to ear… a true sign of things to come. Continuing his early fascination with music, Rain was later drawn to electronic music, inspired by its ability to combine the best of organically played instruments and the synthetic pleasures of sounds more exotic to the human ear. After beginning a DJ career in the 90s, Rain began incorporating the music he was making in his home studio into his DJ sets. That was all it took to trigger a full-blown love affair with electronic music and the process of its creation... and Phutureprimitive was born.

Phutureprimitive’s music is singular and unique in its approach. Lush melodies drift across intricate rhythms, groove heavy beats and warm, fuzzy bass lines. Often exploring a dark and dense palette, his music also manages to convey a sense of tranquility and beauty, engaging the listener into hypnotic movement and often escalating into a full-on kinetic experience. Shimmering with cinematic qualities, his music ultimately speaks to the body, mind and soul.

Hedflux is the primary music project of DJ/producer Steve Young. Originating from Scotland, and now based in Hawaii, Steve has been immersed in electronic music for more than two decades. He started deejaying in 1992 and learned music production as an evening/weekend hobby while pursuing an academic interest in Physics and Mathematics. After graduating in 2004 with a PhD in Quantum Physics, he left academia and spent five years working in the tech industry, during which time a relentless desire to live from the heart inspired him to finally quit employment in 2010 and embody his musical passion completely.

Combining the rhythmic elements of breaks with the sonic geometries of psytrance, Hedflux has become synonymous with the styles known as “psybreaks” or “psychedelic tech-funk”, leading the way for a growing group of artists who resonate with the sound, and developing a strong following in both the psytrance and breaks/bass music scenes. The seminal 2010 track “Mindcell” exemplifies his early works; spending 10 weeks at the top of the Beatport Breaks chart, and becoming the 3rd top selling tune of the year, Mindcell went on to win the “Best Track” award at the 2011 Breakspoll Awards. Since then the Hedflux sound has evolved to encompass a broad range of rhythms and tempos, most recently showcased in his ‘Soul Science’ album release on 9/27/2016.

Scott Sterling brings a deep love of rhythm, drums, and dance to his distinctive style of electronic fusion.  An expert percussionist specializing in the tamborine and framedrum families, he weaves together intricate hand percussion with contemporary sounds into high-energy grooves, equally inspirational to the dancefloor and the on-stage performer. Drawing inspiration primarily from the old music of Europe and the Mediterranean, his music is a unique alchemy of ancient  traditions, tribal rhythms, and sensual pagan atmosphere.

Originating in San Francisco’s crucible of bellydance, bass culture, and world music fusion, Drumspyder has come into his own as an original producer, building a substantial catalog of work on the Caravan, Dakini, and Desert Trax labels, and releasing two EPs of original music in 2015. He is a prolific remixer, lending his signature live percussion and melodic touch to the Desert Dwellers, Deya Dova, David Starfire, as well as various traditional ensembles. His music has been featured in numerous dance DVDs and theatrical productions.
